Pocket Contractor Marketplace

Overview

Pocket is an online platform that connects users with skilled contractors. Users can create tickets, receive bids, and make informed decisions based on ratings and reviews. Pocket gives customers full control over choosing professionals, making the process more transparent and efficient. As the Lead UX Designer, I led the full product redesign — from research and journey mapping to visual design and front-end collaboration. I also helped reimagine the MVP into a scalable experience for both clients and contractors.

The Chalange

Hiring a reliable contractor online can be overwhelming. Between unclear pricing, fake reviews, and inconsistent quality, users often feel uncertain about their choices. Pocket set out to design a platform that solves these pain points by:

  • Removing the opacity in contractor services
  • Giving customers genuine control over the process
  • Creating an intuitive, streamlined experience from start to finish

We took an iterative approach — listening to real users, refining based on feedback, and never losing sight of the core mission: empower the customer. As we iterated, the product replaced guesswork with clarity. We introduced a standardized, line-item bid that spelled out scope, materials, labor, timeline, and fees up front; surfaced verified licenses, insurance, and real proof of work at the exact decision moment; moved all messaging and files into a single thread with explicit approvals for changes; and tied payments to milestones with a visible progress tracker. The result is a guided, transparent journey that reduces anxiety, shortens time to a qualified bid, and helps people feel confident about who they hire and what it will cost.

Research and Discovery

The primary motive behind conducting user research is rooted in the essential need to comprehend individuals who engage with the design of the Pocket Contractor Marketplace. Gaining insights into the user base becomes a cornerstone for crafting designs that truly resonate with them.

To initiate my technical assessment, I distributed a survey to friends and family familiar with online hiring platforms. I formulated straightforward questions to delve into the motivations driving users to engage with online hiring content:

  • Do you use any applications for hiring professionals or contractors online? (e.g., Thumbtack, Angie's List, etc.)
  • If yes, could you please specify your favorite?
  • How frequently do you utilize such applications for hiring services?
  • What features are crucial for you when using a professional hiring application?
  • What incentives would encourage you to hire more professionals online?

The Solution

To address the complex challenges in contractor services, Pocket embarked on a design journey deeply rooted in user-centric principles. Guided by the values of simplicity, transparency, and empowerment, the team set out to reshape the experience, introducing a solution that redefined how people connect with and hire contractors. This focus on elevating interactions opened the door to innovative design interventions that aimed not only to solve existing pain points but also to inspire confidence and trust across the marketplace.

The process began with a thorough exploration of user frustrations and industry obstacles, uncovering the real needs that shaped the marketplace. Collaborative workshops and iterative testing ensured that ideas evolved into intuitive flows that felt natural to users. Each cycle of refinement translated insights into practical features, gradually building the backbone of Pocket’s reimagined experience. This iterative approach reinforced the belief that meaningful design emerges from listening closely to people, testing relentlessly, and translating feedback into purposeful outcomes.

Design and Iteration

With a clear understanding of user needs and industry challenges, the design phase centered on turning insights into a Pocket Contractor Marketplace that is both visually compelling and functionally intuitive.

User-Centric Interface

The interface was designed with the user at its core — simple, clear, and seamless to navigate. From creating tickets to reviewing bids and making decisions, every step was crafted to reduce friction and increase confidence. Visual elements were chosen intentionally to guide, not overwhelm, ensuring clarity throughout the experience.

Transparency and Trust

To eliminate the opacity often found in contractor services, the design made every stage of the hiring process visible — profiles, reviews, and bid details. This transparency built trust between users and contractors, creating a foundation of confidence that carried through the entire journey.

Empowering Control

At every turn, the design emphasized empowerment. Users were given genuine control — from setting preferences and shaping their hiring journey to providing feedback that refined the marketplace. This autonomy transformed the platform into more than a service: it became a tool for users to actively shape their own outcomes.

Implementaion

The transition from design to implementation was carefully orchestrated. By working closely with development, I ensured that the envisioned user experience of the Pocket Contractor Marketplace translated seamlessly into a functional reality.

Responsive Development

Accessibility was a priority from the start. The platform was built responsively, optimized across desktop, tablet, and mobile to deliver a consistent and enjoyable experience no matter the device.

Quality Assurance

Robust QA protocols were embedded throughout implementation. Each feature was tested rigorously to catch and resolve bugs or inconsistencies early. This discipline ensured a stable, reliable product for both users and contractors.

User Education

Launching the marketplace wasn’t only about releasing a product — it was about empowering users to succeed with it. Educational content, tutorials, and guided onboarding were provided to help users quickly understand the features and get the most out of the platform.

User Flow Map

A detailed user flow map accompanied implementation, aligning design intent with technical execution and ensuring that every interaction point reinforced clarity and usability.

Results

The recent launch of the Pocket Contractor Marketplace marks a significant milestone in my UX design journey. While structured user feedback is still being gathered, early indicators are promising: session observations show reduced friction across listing and bidding flows, internal assessments note fewer drop-offs, and stakeholder reviews highlight clearer decision support. Together, these signals suggest the product is resonating and set a strong foundation for the next iteration.

Let's collaborate and create extraordinary experiences together.
